This book begins with a description of what it was like to grow up Catholic in the middle part of the 20th century. It then follows the author’s journey as a teacher in Catholic Education and describes the different way that modern Catholic children are being educated. It traces her growth into a personal spirituality, which leads her to question many of the Catholic Church’s teachings, especially those to do with sexual and reproductive matters. Finally, it asks Catholic women to take on the responsibility of changing the Catholic Church themselves. It is a nostalgic, educational, stimulating and challenging read by a wife, a mother, a teacher and somebody who has thought deeply about spirituality.
While some of the FBI, Mafia and other criminal plotlines aren't quite as interesting as the behind the scenes of the actual films, they are still pertinent to the overall story.
Growing up with porn and looking at it probably much younger than I was suppossed to, the people in the first half of this book almost seem like friends, like some strange relatives that don't always appear at holiday dinners, that not all of my relatives approve of.
My bias of course is to the first half of this book and the stories of Marilyn Chambers, John Holmes, Linda Lovelace, etc. This is not a polished work of art it is an unvarnished account of a time (and experience) that could only be describe in the words of the grade three dropout who experienced it. Despite his elegant prose, Kanigel's exhaustive treatment of his subject's life and experiments strained my interest. I would reccomend it highly.
