Wow! I just finished this book and was really taken in. Most of the book is about the beauty of Kodiak, life there (especially hunting, hiking and fishing), and about the fascinating characteristics of bears. Some chapters (e.g., exhaust systems) were not as detailed as the engine chapter and were slightly disappointing.
I followed this book up with Keith Cameron's Sportbike Performance Hankbook, which explains some systems in more detail. The book is a heroic attempt to bring geology to the masses and to inform us all of the potential dangers that are lurking all around us. Though he lacks Bryson's swift narrative and comical anecdotes, what we gain from Kaufman is an update from Walden Pond that we might be surprised to read. From 1894 until 1897, the quiet French countryside became the hunting ground of Joseph Vacher, a murderous psychopath known as "The Killer of Little Shepherds" who, like Ted Bundy a century later, would begin his life's work after being rejected by the woma
